This year’s conference was a blast! The 2008 conference was the 14th annual conference presented by the Governor's Council for People with Disabilities. This year's theme was "Mission Ready: Countdown to Change."
The conference opened with a welcome and remarks from Suellen Jackson-Boner, executive director, and Steve Tilden, chairperson, of the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities.
The opening session also featured a presentation by Dr. David Braddock, executive director of the University of Colorado’s Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities. Dr. Braddock explained how Indiana compares with other states in disability services and summarized national trends.
John Dickerson, executive director of The Arc of Indiana, moderated a panel of experts who discussed Indiana disability services.
The conference included workshops presented by organizations from across Indiana. Topics included transportation issues, assistive technology, the ADA, and careers in the arts for people with disabilities.
Fifth Freedom presented a workshop entitled YouTube and Beyond: Using the Social Web to Transform the Future. We have posted the complete workshop, including my notes and PowerPoint, on this Web site. YouTube and Beyond.
Dale DiLeo, the author of Raymond’s Room, spoke about New Frontiers in Disability Services. Afterward, he stayed to answer questions and sign copies of his book.
The conference ended with an awards ceremony and a presentation from Juliette Rizzo, disability advocate and Ms. Wheelchair America 2005. Paul Shankland, planning coordinator for the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, won an award for his 36 years of service helping people with disabilities.
